Positioned along the Missouri River at the gateway between Nebraska, Iowa, and South Dakota, Dakota County serves as an important hub for commerce, transportation, agriculture, and family life in the Midwest.

Dakota County is home to a diverse group of communities, including the cities of Dakota City and South Sioux City, as well as the villages of Emerson, Homer, Hubbard, and Jackson. The county also includes several unincorporated areas such as Goodwin, Nacora, and Willis. Together, these communities form a close-knit region where neighbors look out for one another and where public safety remains a top priority.

Tim Decker was appointed Sheriff of Dakota County, Nebraska, on February 2, 2026, by the Dakota County Board of Commissioners. He was selected to serve the remainder of the term following the retirement of former Sheriff Chris Kleinberg.
