Criminal Investigations
The Criminal Investigations Division (CID) of the Dakota County Sheriff’s Office is responsible for investigating serious crimes and supporting patrol operations through follow-up investigations, evidence development, and case preparation.
Our detectives work closely with local, state, and federal partners to ensure thorough investigations and successful case outcomes.
Areas of Responsibility
The Criminal Investigations Division investigates a wide range of cases, including:
- Felony offenses
- Assaults and violent crimes
- Sexual offenses
- Child abuse and neglect cases
- Narcotics investigations
- Property crimes and theft
- Financial and fraud-related crimes

Case Follow-Up & Investigations
After an initial report is taken by a deputy, cases requiring additional investigation may be assigned to a detective. This may include:
- Conducting interviews and interrogations
- Collecting and reviewing evidence
- Executing search warrants
- Coordinating with prosecutors for case filing
Not all cases are assigned to a detective. Assignments are based on case type, severity, and available leads.
