Courthouse History
The Dakota County Courthouse in Dakota City has served as the center of county government since the 1870s. The original courthouse was built in 1870–1871, and the current Art Deco structure—still in use today—was constructed in 1940–1941.
Throughout its history, the courthouse has played an important role in the community, including hosting a visit from President Rutherford B. Hayes in 1878. Today, it remains a lasting symbol of Dakota County’s heritage and public service. Learn more at the Dakota County Historical Society.
