Scam Alert: Fraudulent “Court Enforcement” Notices

The Dakota County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a fraudulent message circulating via text and email that appears to be an official court notice regarding unpaid traffic violations.

These messages may look legitimate and include:

  • Official-looking court headers
  • Case numbers and judge names
  • Threats of penalties, license suspension, or legal action
  • QR codes or links directing you to make a payment

These messages are scams.

What You Should Know

Government agencies, including courts and law enforcement, do not contact individuals in this manner to demand immediate payment or request sensitive personal information through text or email.

Scammers use urgency and fear to trick individuals into:

  • Clicking malicious links
  • Scanning QR codes
  • Calling fraudulent phone numbers
  • Providing personal or financial information

What NOT to Do

If you receive a message like this:

  • Do NOT click any links
  • Do NOT scan any QR codes
  • Do NOT call or text the number provided
  • Do NOT share personal or financial information

What You SHOULD Do

  • Delete the message immediately
  • Do not engage with the sender
  • If you are unsure about a citation or court matter, contact the appropriate agency directly using verified contact information
